The Future of Glasses Free 3D Technology?
In yet another glasses free 3D news story, iPONT International has announced the company will show off its "breakthrough 3D without glasses system" at this month's Screenmedia Expo at the Earls Court in London.
iPONT is an innovator in the growing glasses free 3D market and today it claims that it has created a glasses free 3D system that delivers the most realistic and immersive 3D experience on the market. In a statement released this evening, iPONT states its system offers a wide viewing zone (the biggest criticism of current autostereoscopic technology like used on the Nintendo 3DS) and can convert any stereoscopic input into a glasses-free 3D experience via a box of tricks called the iPONT 3D TV box.
The technology will be on display at this year's Screenmedia event on May 18th and 19th at Earls Court 2, London. If you are attending, you can visit the iPONT International at stand number F15.
What is especially interesting is that iPONT say there auto-stereoscopic displays range in sizes from 27" – 65". Usually, auto-stereoscopic screens are only available in small sizes unless they use multiple viewing zones. Another bold claim is that the iPONT 3D displays offer a viewing zone of a whopping 120 degrees! However, what is not clear from the statement is whether that consists of one large viewing zone (where the viewer can freely move his or her head without the 3D effect ever being lost) or multiple viewing zones (which consist of several but restrictive viewing zones) which companies like Alioscopy already feature in their glasses free displays. Apparently the resolution has not been compromised either with a full 1920 x 1080 definition capability and the image is said to be just as clear in bright conditions.
iPONT's 3D TV box technology is available as a set-top box and the goal is to embed the technology into any device that can receive a regular stereo signal. iPONT still appear to be positioning this technology for the digital signage market rather than in the home with shopping centres, airports, entertainment venues and sports arenas all on their radar.
Out of the blue have come some very bold statements from iPONT. As it is said that "seeing is believing" I do not know how good the system will be but if it is as good as they say it is, it will certainly give the likes of Masterimage 3D and the research team at MIT Media Lab an incentive to step up their game!
