A 3D printer is fairly straightforward in what it does: it prints three-dimensional objects. In a nutshell, it's the process of turning a digital file into something you can hold, touch, and use. It takes advantage of something called "additive processes." This basically means that when you watch the printer print out your digital file, it will look like it's laying down the material it uses in successive layers horizontally until the object is completely created. These layers are very thin and will gradually grow into an object you can physically manipulate. No, this isn't science fiction…at least, not anymore!

What Else is New?

How about a 3D scanner? That's right, you can take an existing object and actually make a copy of it. There are many types of 3D scanners available, and still new ones are in development. One of the most popular scanners are laser scanners; these are the easiest to use. You place an object on the plate and turn on the device. After just a few short minutes, you have the digital version on your computer. You can then take that digital file and use a 3D printer to make a replica of the object.

3D in Your Hands!

All this 3D technology is for your home, but what about for on the go? Companies are coming out with ways to give you the 3D experience on your phone and tablet as well. That's not all, though: rumors hint that they'll be able to capture your pictures and turn them into 3D images on your phone. Instead of the selfie you just took looking static and flat, you'll be able to project it into a hologram.

The Absolute Facts!

The idea of smartphones having the ability to create a 3D experience is revolutionizing the idea of mobile technology. You may be able to tilt the screen to access menus, so you no longer have to touch the screen. Other unbelievable technologies include the four eye-tracking cameras located on the front of the phone: whichever image you decide to project will follow your eyes. This way, no matter where you look, you can see the hologram. Since these phones are still being developed, no one really knows who might release them or what price point they'll see. However, with the competitive nature of the mobile technology marketplace, the public is sure to have the awesome power of 3D right in their hands sooner than later.

To Put It Plainly…

There are 3D printers that allow you to take a picture of a beautiful flower and turn it into something you can hold in your hand, and 3D scanners that can, for instance, take one vase and turn it into two vases. Plus, according to Cheap Phones, 3D phones and tablets that don't require special glasses such as the NEO3DO and simulated 3D experience of the Amazon Fire are becoming available for an affordable price across various mobile carriers. What else could the future hold, with all these new technologies that the general public can access, and so much more to come?
