Speaking exclusively to Screen Daily, Vue Entertainment CEO Tim Richards said “It looks like we are going to be screening the Olympics, which is very exciting. Now we’re working on the 3D side of it. It’s looking very encouraging.” He continued to say “Our goal is to try and get something on every day. It is still in discussion but looking very encouraging.”

Vue also told Screen Daily that it hopes to do the same with the Euro football tournament and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations (which is still to be confirmed as to whether it will be shot in 3D – strike permitting!)

Digital cinemas have presented live 3D coverage before, the most high profile of which was the Wimbledon Tennis Championships finals last summer. However, the UK attendance figures were dismal although auditoriums in New York were packed out.

Last October, 3D Focus revealed Freemantle Media, producers of the X Factor, had been in discussions with a live digital cinema event company to stream the X Factor finals in 3D to digital cinemas although whether this will happen remains to be seen.

What do you think? Will you be watching the free London Olympics 3D coverage in the cinema? Has the London Olympics persuaded you to buy a 3D TV?
