During the Global Gaming Expo, guests saw a large screen using the same technology deployed for the . Perhaps to add a sense of exclusivity, getting past the security and velvet ropes to view the demonstration was apparently much like trying to get into the Marquee Nightclub on a busy weekend night.

Tina Ferko, a spokeswoman for Interblock, the Slovenia based company responsible for the demo said “We wanted to show this to our biggest customers, because it’s rather expensive technology. We wanted to show them what’s possible on their casino floor.”

After getting feedback from potential customers, the company will work on design improvements, and Ferko said the holograms could be available for casino floors by March.

The casino sector has always a hotbed of technological innovation. Automation is reducing staffing costs and the mechanical systems are being replaced with electronic displays to increase gambling time, game options, entice passer-bys with stunnng graphics with reduce maintenance costs. Autostereoscopic display manufacturers often present their glasses free 3D solutions at gambling trade shows and we recently reported about IGT’s REELdepth technology that layers two Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) on top of each other, with an interstitial filter between them. The MLD® technology provides real depth allowing gamblers to play reel slots, video slots, and video poker, in 3D graphics without having to wear 3-d glasses.

Todd DiMillo, Floor Manager, San Manuel Indian Bingo & Casino said: "Initially, the 3D appearance draws players’ interest, but once they figure out they can switch from playing a 3-reel spinning-reel theme to a 4- or 5-reel game right at their seat, they’re hooked."

Online casinos are now advertising 3D games although the term refers to virtual environments and avatars rather than stereoscopic 3D. The idea is to emulate the feel of real casinos, allowing players to feel immersed in a virtual environment and interact with other players to make online gambling more social.

The casino and gambling industry embraces new technology and it will be interesting to see how 3D fits into future innovations. One particularly exciting progression could be using head mounted displays such as the Sony 3D visor to immerse gamers into exciting gambling worlds. This could be a life life poker table, interacting with players from all over the world or fantasy environments that combines the imagination of the latest computer games with the lure of winning cash. And being in a virtual world, detached from reality, might increase gambling duration, music to the ears of the gambling sector.
