High TV made a splash at MIPTV in April 2011 when it officially launched the world’s first 3D lifestyle channel. From the same stable as global network Fashion One, High TV 3D spent the previous two years building up a library of 3D content spanning a wide range of genres such as fashion, fitness, celebrity gossip, shopping and travel.

In an interview with 3dfocus.co.uk, as part of our MIPCOM 3D coverage, High TV 3D Senior Vice President Ronny Shany tells us what the business has been doing in the short time since MIPTV, after we exclusively revealed the channel’s carriage deal with Korea Telecom.

3D FOCUS: Since MIPTV 2011, have you signed any further carriage deals?

RONNY SHANY: Since MIPTV we have had an amazing 6 months with 12 new platforms signed up. We have sold our license in a few territories and a few big carriage deals are about to close very soon.

3D FOCUS: You have been busy making a lot of 3D content over the past few years – when do you expect to break even? Is this very much a long term business while 3D TVs gradually infiltrate people's homes?

RONNY SHANY: Well first of all, the statistics show that about 4% of society owns a 3D TV set. But 43% of new televisions sold are 3D enabled so the growth is out there. You have to take that into consideration plus the enormous investment in advertising from 3D TV manufacturers. Yes we invested millions of dollars into this endeavour and we decided to become the pioneers but we are not in it to go into the black two months into the launch. We plan to redeem a small proportion of our investment on one hand and on the other hand, we are a private equity fund and have other businesses we monetise from.

3D FOCUS: This year, you will be bringing two glasses free screens to MIPCOM. Firstly, what is the reason for this? And secondly, stereoscopic shows tend to need some sort of conversion software like iPONT or Triaxes to be able to be screened on large auto-stereoscopic screens for multiple viewing. How will you convert it?

RONNY SHANY: Like we did in MIPTV, we are trying to bring the new technology out there. This is the reason we hired a group of professionals to work for us, and they are going to convert all of our content to auto-stereoscopic that can be shown on 3D screens without glasses.

3D FOCUS: Since MIPTV, there have been quite a few negative reports in the media about 3D TV – how you ever thought "have we made the right decision?"

RONNY SHANY: I think we made the best decision EVER. First, I am a big fan of 3D and second, these days all of the TV manufactures are selling ONLY 3D sets in the stores, so the growth must be there one day.

3D FOCUS:  As far as I know, you are the only channel in the world that covers most genres in 3D. Many would say viewers do not want to watch lifestyle shows (cookery/celebrity etc) in 3D – can you prove them wrong?

RONNY SHANY: I believe that these are the best shows in 3D because you are feeling close to the stars. Our strategy is to broadcast the look and feel programs; that is why we have added new extreme shows, magic shows and live show events to our catalogue.

3D FOCUS: What is your business model? Have you attracted any advertisers to the channel?

RONNY SHANY: So far we produceed 3 TV Commercials for very big clients that are supposed to look amazing. We see a big future for 3D advertising.
