From today, consumers will be able to embed video content into their photos with the new HP Live Photo service.
Powered by Aurasma, owned by HP, the free iPhone app allows users to upload a video (maximum of 45 seconds) and share it with others by inviting them to download and print an automatically generated still taken from the sequence.
A template can also be added, such as a wedding card, and images are printed on 4 inch x 6 inch photo size paper. Receivers of the video message need to also download the HP Live Photo app and hover their phone over the photo while in the app’s ‘View Tab’. The still image suddenly comes to life, as if the handset takes the image off pause and starts the video.
"Augmented reality is the new medium for bringing the physical world to digital life and HP Live Photo puts the power of this technology into the hands of everyday consumers," said Annie Weinberger, general manager, Aurasma. "Not only does HP Live Photo heighten the intrigue and surprise of receiving a printed greeting card, but for the first time mobile videos live on beyond the digital world making them truly part of the physical world as well."
The service is only available for iOS 5.1 users in America right now but other mobile operating systems are to follow later in the year.
It is similar to a service launched early last year by online greetings company moonpig.com.
They teamed up with Zappar to create a range of video-enabled greeting cards. Users can upload personal video greetings to the site and embed it into their chosen card.
When the recipient receives the card in the post, they download the moonpig.com app and view the moving message through the screen of the smartphone.
