The Smiler The Game A 475x259 Alton Towers releases video preview of The Smiler AR game

Ahead of the May launch of £18 million The Smiler rollercoaster, Alton Towers reveals a preview of the official game that will unlock augmented reality content in the Staffordshire attraction itself

The Smiler: The Game will be released on Android and IOS devices and is part of a marketing strategy which included branding sheep with a smiley face in January.

The video provides a sneak preview of the NoLimits Roller Coaster style game and provides further clues to what the real ride will feature.  The Smiler features at least eight inversions and two lift hills although the ‘world first’ element is still hidden from the video.

You will be able to ride the world first coaster (for real) in May.

In the game, gamers will be challenged to take control of the coaster's trains, navigating their way around the track without veering off course. If they are successful, they will be rewarded with points that can be used to purchase "track upgrades".

For example, under 'Loops' upgrades you can purchase ‘inverted drops’, ‘batwings’ (heart-shaped roller coaster element that inverts twice) and ‘camelbacks’ (A series of hills where each preceding one is slightly smaller for airtime). Further incentives for playing the game will be unlockable hidden content when visiting the park itself, with Alton Towers promising that augmented reality technology will be used to provide access to additional images, video and upgrades.

The game is expected to go live over the next three days.
