Can’t wait for the Oculus Rift? Build a similar version yourself using an online guide
Judging from the response at CES 2013, the virtual reality Oculus Rift system could transform gaming. But if you don’t want to wait till 2014 (expected consumer release), here is how you can build your own
Artificial intelligence researcher Rod Furlan has published a step-by-step guide explaining how you can build an Oculus Rift style head mounted display.
Furlan is keen to point out that his guide is not designed to compete with Oculus Rift – it is not cheaper and probably incompatible with the games being designed for Palmer Lucker’s Kickstarter success, but it is designed to "carry on the DIY VR torch."
No prior experience with electronics or VR hardware is required and he suggests it would take about a weekend to complete (without prior experience).

Furlan suggests you can write your own games and virtual reality experiments using one of the many free 3D engines available. He points to Crysis 2 which supports native SBS stereoscopic output and the TriDef driver to enable non-native SBS mode for hundreds of other games.
Since there aren’t many games out there with head-tracking support, you can use FreePIE to enable basic 2DoF (degrees of freedom) tracking through mouse emulation on most games.
This guide is the result of a collaborative effort by several members of the MTBS3D community, including Palmer Luckey himself.
