The 3D Experience was a three day event held in New York between September 24th – 26th. On Friday 24th, AMC Theatres Times Square hosted a day long seminar featuring guest speakers, expert analysis, panel discussions and 3D video demos including exclusive clips from the movies Tron: Legacy and Dreamworks Megamind. During the following Saturday and Sunday, many major electronic manufacturers including Panasonic, LG and Mitsubishi showcased some of their latest 3D equipment during a free public exhibition in the Discovery TSX Building. They were joined by a host of smaller companies launching 3D products which were very interesting.

Jim Chabin (International 3D Society)

I3DS Logo 2 300x91 3D Experience Conference Summary First up was Jim Chabin from The International 3D Society. He spoke about 3D being a storm – you can decide to take shelter or not. He continued to say that about 30% of current productions are currently being produced in 3D and it is estimated that approximately $30 million is added (on average) to the bottom line. Your next stat is that 3 x more people are being employed by the 3D industry than there were two years ago. He made a fascinating assumption …

Jim Chabin quote 3D Experience Conference Summary So according to Jim we are going to get 3D ATMs, 3D GPS devices and even 3D inflight entertainment (I recently watched Avatar on a Virgin Atlantic aircraft – it did seem to be missing something!) Actually, I can believe 3D inflight entertainment has a future as it would lend itself very well to auto stereoscopic viewing – as a passenger’s head is usually in the same place for hours (so you wont be going out of ‘the zone’) and seat-back TVs are designed for single viewing.

In fact check out this link about 3D inflight entertainment – http://www.marthastewardess.com/2010/05/17/airline-interiors-3d-movies-poised-to-take-off/

It is estimated that 27 – 46 million TVs will be 3D capable by 2013. More sobering was that Samsung and Sony have announced demand for 3DTV has softened which was backed up by recent sales figures suggesting 3DTVs are not selling as well as expected.
