China’s Highest Rated Reality Show to go 3D
One of China’s highest rated TV shows – “If You are the One”, will start shooting with the Panasonic 3DP1 camera after previous 3D trials.
The hit dating show has already been testing 3D production using Panasonic 3DA1 cameras for a planned move into 3D. The dating show has caused controversy in China when it was first aired with central government officials describing the shows as “vulgar”, "promoting materialism" and “making up false stories, thus hurting the credibility of the media.” Since then, the show has been toned down so producers must be hoping that the 3D format will retain the show's viewers in an increasingly competitive Chinese television landscape.
China appears to be racing towards a 3D future, with a growing pool of 3D content available online and 3D movies continuing to grow in popularity.
The Shanghai 3D Committee was formed recently – an agreement to cooperatively promote 3D with Panasonic. The Shanghai 3D Committee will soon be holding a 3D contest for those keen to get recognition for their 3D productions.
Recently, popular video sharing website YouKu (the Chinese equivalent of YouTube) launched China’s first online 3D movie theatre – Lenovo B3 3D Theatre. This service offers anaglyph previews of 3D films enabling viewers to decide whether they want to purchase a ticket to watch a 3D film in the theatre and RealD recently announced a partnership with Beijing SAGA Luxury Cinema Management Co. to outfit the Chinese theatre chain with 3D technology, adding a further 100 3D capable screens to China’s 3D theatre screen expansion.
In an interview with 3D Focus TV, Steve Schklair, CEO of 3ality Technica said “We are starting to do broadcast work in a lot of other territories especially South America and Asia… “China is very strong at this point. If things move on China’s time they’ll be the world leaders soon.”
If Jiangsu TV’s ‘If You Are The One’ proves to be a success in 3D, who knows – perhaps ITV will be tempted to shoot ‘Take Me Out’ 3D? Anyone?
