BBC to launch 2 year 3D trial period including a 3D drama
'Broadcast' reports BBC Head of 3D kim Shillinglaw has announced the most ambitious BBC 3D trial yet, with a 3D scripted drama and even the possibility of a temporary 3D channel.
Shillinglaw has confirmed to Broadcast that the 3D comedy drama will be broadcast early next year as well as testing the medium in “as many genres as we can”, including arts and science 3D shows.
After trialling the use of the BBC iPlayer to stream 3D content, Shillinglaw has said that the corporation wishes to take that further and that “We are the only broadcaster looking into that type of thing – it could be very innovative,”
The BBC have completed various 3D trials such as the broadcast of the Wimbledon Tennis Championship finals in 3D, Strictly Come Dancing in 3D and Streetdance 3D. BBC Sport will be broadcasting limited hours of the London Olympics 3D coverage and has hinted that the Queens Jubilee celebrations might be broadcast in 3D.
