French Open Tennis returns in 3D ahead of summer of 3D sport

Sky have announced carriage of Eurosport’s two week 3D coverage of the 2012 French Open for Sky 3D subscribers.

For the third consecutive year, Eurosport will broadcast a live 3D feed from the Centre Court of the French Open between May 28th to June 10th. This follows the announcement that Sky will be broadcasting over 100 hours of 3D Olympics coverage from Eurosport for free, to all its 4 million Sky HD subscribers for three weeks.

Jean Thierry Augustin, Eurosport's Managing Director of Rights Acquisition, Distribution & Development said: “Eurosport was the first broadcaster to present live tennis in 3D with the French Open in 2010 and this agreements with Sky will give the British public an opportunity to experience live Grand Slam tennis in 3D.  Eurosport has already committed to broadcast over 100 hours of 3D content from the London Olympic Games this summer ensuring an even wider variety of sports can also be viewed in this innovative way. In January 2012 Eurosport extended its relationship with the French Tennis Federation for a further three years to reinforce its position as the leading live tennis channel in Europe.”

It is set to be a busy year for 3D sports. This weekend, Sky 3D will broadcast the UEFA Champions League Final between Chelsea and Bayern Munich and Rugby’s Heineken Cup Final between Ulster and Leinster. Additionally, Soccer AM will be broadcast in 3D for the first time this Saturday. The following weekend (May 26 th / 27 th ) will feature live 3D coverage of the Aviva Premiership Rugby Final , in partnership with ESPN and England vs. Barbarians from Twickenham and live Boxing , with Carl Froch taking on Lucian Bute for the IBF world super-middleweight title.

Sky 3D’s Eurosport coverage will include the men’s 100m final as well as a wide range of other events that will be broadcast in 3D for the first time, including gymnastics, swimming, basketball and canoeing. Around 8 hours of live coverage will be broadcast every day, alongside 4 additional hours of the day’s main highlights, providing the most comprehensive 3D coverage of the Olympics on British television.

UEFA will be offering 3D coverage of the Euro 2012 final and the Wimbledon Tennis Championships will return in 3D, with more coverage than last year. Sky 3D will be also broadcasting the One Day International Cricket between England and Australia, Rugby Super League the Premier League will return in 3D.
