3net looks towards Asia for growth
3net, the 3D TV channel joint venture between Sony, IMAX and Discovery, may find greater success in the emerging Asian market
Speaking to Variety, 3net president Tom Cosgrove said: "Asia will be a very substantial part of our business in the next several years. We expect Asia to be a really hot spot for 3D TV. There is a big push there. We met a huge number of companies and people across the whole span of the 3D TV community. What we kept hearing especially in China and Korea was the desire for content. And that's good news for us."
Companies such as CAMERON | PACE Group, 3ality Technica and RED see China in particular as a place that embraces 3D more readily than the west, assisted by the government's favourable terms for foreign 3D movies.
CCTV have launched a 3D test channel and it was reported that the government was planning to launch a further 9 3D TV channels by 2015 but this is now looking less certain.
Back in October 2012, Cosgrove admitted that “There was enormous hype, beyond what was realistic” when talking to C21 about 3D and it is clear the company sees 4K as a strong aspect to their strategy moving forward.
He continued: “With the industry now struggling to keep pace with the rapidly accelerating consumer demand for 3D programming across multiple platforms – and now with the evolution of 4K – the formation of a world class production studio to help fill both the 3D and ultra high definition content voids became a logical next step in our evolution as a global player in the entertainment arena.”
3net are covering the bases with Total D – a term they coined to describe 3D 4K, 2D 4K, 3D 2K and both 3D/2D HD formats. A 3 x one hour series called Space will be the studio’s first Total D output which will explore the universe, from the Big Bang to the present and into the future.
