ViewPoint 3D Designer 1.0, currently in its first iteration, is able to run on low powered computers. The demo shown to 3D Focus was running on an ATOM processor and regular PC.

The interface is relatively simple and includes pre-built objects, textures, shaders, lighting effects etc. It has been built in C++ from the ground up with the intention to create a 3D version of PowerPoint. The system can incorporate RSS feeds and display 2D photos and videos on 3D objects. Main applications are expected to be digital signage and presentations.

ViewPoint have partnered with glasses free 3D display specialists Dimenco to show how the software can work on autostereo screens. To render the image in a suitable format for such a screen, the software splits the image into four quadrants at sixty frames per second – The full cour image, a 2D + depth map, the full colour background and the 2D + depth map of the background (the latter two quadrants enable the ‘look around’ effect). These images are interlaced and the Dimenco screen render 28 viewpoints. ViewPoint 3D is also in discussions with other autostereoscopic display manufacturers for potential partnerships.

This is very interesting, Presente3D has integrated the same type of functionality directly in Microsoft PowerPoint. They just released a free beta to the public at http://www.presente3d.com

I am curious how this compares.

Presente3D is an add on that extrudes existing PoerPoint shapes, whereas ViewPoint 3D is a full 3D system that is limited only by the imagination. ViewPoint all complex scenes, flythroughs, sky and ocean simulations, so there not really compatible.
