Autostereoscopic content and display specialists Stream TV have announced an intention to set up a Ultra-D 2160p broadcast head-end transcoder for home glasses free 3D viewing.
Ahead of debuting 31.5 inch and 60 inch Ultra-D displays at CES January 8th to 11th , the company have said it is due to strong response from broadcasters. Stream TV Networks have completed a three month roadshow with the Ultra-D 2160p 4K screen that uses a proprietary optical system to generate a multi-view 3D effect without glasses, rather than lenticular panels as used by rival companies.
According to Mathu Rajan, CEO of Stream TV Networks, “Response to the high-end viewing experience from major industry insiders has been incredible”.
The proprietary format does not require native 4K content; it can use existing 1080p as well as 2K programming as the source. Ultra-D 2160p software does not use scalers to stretch or multiply pixels; it uses sophisticated algorithms to create additional pixel information in the third dimension, using all 8 million pixels for the glasses-free 3D experience.
In October, Rajan said he was talking to manufacturers about integrating the processing technology into TV sets and that Ultra-D 3D sets would be available in the UK in 2013. No price points have been declared but by partnering with TV firms Hisense and Pegatron, the intention is to make glasses free 3D in the home affordable.
