Sony is showing a prototype of a 46 inch LCD 4K display which outputs HD resolution and Dolby has allied with Royal Philips Electronics to launch a suite of technologies designed to deliver full HD 3D content to 3D-enabled devices, including glasses-free displays.

Most mind boggling is a prototype never before seen outside of the labs of its inventors, the Japanese government backed National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT). It is showing a 200 inch glasses free  back-projection display which comprises an array of 200 mini-projectors and a screen combining a condenser lens (Fresnel) and special diffuser film.

Each of its 200 viewpoints gives an HD resolution at 60fps for a viewing angle of 40degrees, a viewing distance of 5.5 metres and an interval of parallax of 22.8mm.

The system has been licenced to JVC for further development. Meanwhil NICT is developing a camera system to capture live action. Research into this has started by using 200 cameras in order to achieve the multiview images.

“We are now researching 3D image capture and transmission technology,” said Dr Shiochiro of NICT.

Content shown included images of a shark underwater, an animation and a Transformers robot.
