YUVsoft Corp to show 2D to 3D conversion tool for mobile
At this week’s IBC, the software R&D company will show a software product that can convert 3D content to suitable parallax settings for small screen platforms, in an almost fully-automatic way.
YUVsoft Stereo Processing Suite will be demo’ed for its use in 3D conversion of content for the smaller screens of glasses free 3D mobiles. Screen size affects the 3D effect of video; content produced for an IMAX screen would look very flat if directly ported to a mobile’s small screen which requires greater parallax to achieve a decent level of depth. In addition to parallax correction, the product allows for automatic correction of geometry and color mismatches between views, disparity map estimation, disparity correction to enable screen-plane level adjustment and stereo-to-multiview conversion for glasses-free 3D displays.

It is difficult to determine what demand there is for such a product. There are very few glasses free 3D mobile phones in circulation and even those are rarely used in 3D – one only needs to look at the usage of the Nintendo 3DS for proof of that. Perhaps if Apple decide to embrace 3D that could change but that decision is unlikely after LG and HTC's 3D phones did not become the game changers the companies expected.
YUVSoft will also be showing their 2D to 3D Suite which they claim only takes a small team of 10 artists to convert a film within one to two months depending on the movie’s type and quality requirements. Prices start at $1500 per minute. It is also available as a set of plug-ins for Adobe After Effects CS5 or later and for Nuke 6.2 or later.
IBC starts September 6th. For more information about YUVsoft visit the YUVsoft website.
