Will you be watching Star Wars 3D?

Jan 14, 2012 25 Comments by

After the success of films like The Lion King 3D, it looks like 2012 will be the year of the back catalogue 2D – 3D conversion. This year will see the re-release of Titanic, Finding Nemo and possibly Inception. Of course next month sees the release of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace 3D.

Star Wars: Phantom Menace 3D will be one of the biggest re-releases this year and it will be in cinemas from February 10th (February 9th in North America).

The classic has been converted by Prime Focus, the company behind Immortals, Clash of the Titans and the upcoming Wrath of the Titans. The 2D to 3D conversion specialists used their View-D system and a team of over 1000 rotoscope artists in India, LA and London to convert Star Wars: Phantom Menace to 3D for Lucasfilm.

Back in March George Lucas said, "It was incredibly important to me that we have the technology, the resources and the time to do this right. I'm very happy with the results I've been seeing on Episode I."

Depending on the commercial success of the first conversion, George Lucas intends to convert the entire series of Star Wars movies into 3D but talking last year he said that would be a yearly release process and only if the public's appetite for it continues.

What do you think?
Do you intend to watch Star Wars 3D? If yes, will that be because it will be in 3D or would you have watched it anyway, just for the chance to see it back on the big screen? Will you steer well clear? Do you believe the quality of conversion is acceptable now? (Hugo and Transformers featured many converted scenes). Or do you feel the back catalogue 3D re-release is exploitative?

With the release of Star Wars 3D a few weeks away, we would be delighted if you could vote in the Star Wars poll (via the box on the right in the centre column). The results will be revealed at the end of the month. Also, it would be great to hear your thoughts on 2D to 3D conversion in general.

I’ll be watching the first day it’s released.  The pod racing scene should be fantastic in 3d. I hope it’s a success and Lucas goes on to convert the other films.

  • cress

Yep I’ll watch it again.  The Pod Race is worth it the price of admission alone.

  • Raptor

I will watch again for the 3D

  • Thereisnomouse

I will be facing the big screen, because of the pod race sequence. As a huge Star Wars fan, I’m sorry to say that this scene is the key point of this movie in which empathy for the characters is close to zero. In addition, I have some doubts about the quality of this conversion since I saw the trailer amazing Titanic in 3D. Cameron was behind this and you can feel it when Obi Wan is just a flat piece with a background (Qui-Gon’s death), in the trailer for Titanic 3D you can see the volumes on the faces, dresses, hats …

I love star wars, I will definitely watch it in 3D. Sounds great. I have an LG cinema tv. Are the star wars all going to be released on Blu-Ray. I would definitely buy  3 4 and 5

  • Garsy1701

No doubt that I will be queueing to see this one !!

  • Rancordung

Can’t wait. I’m a massive fan and will watch it in 2D or 3D. Don’t have a 3D tv but would well consider buying one if all SW films come out on 3D

  • Sk84mdb

can’t wait this is going to be fun

I grew up watching these films and say what you have to say about the prequels, but I am definitely going to be there.

  • Empirerules

I’ll be watching once they get to the original trilogy – going to pass on the lesser prequels.

Where is the “Fuck yes” option

  • Lamaseverywhere

OMG how Im really looking forward to seeing this again on the big screen and in 3D!!

i get to watch two hours of boring alien bureaucrats in 3D?? wow!!

seriously, it’s pathetic that the monstrosity known as george lucas is still somehow reining in the dollars from you suckers.

Lucas continues to try and exploit the fans when all they really want is the original cinema releases not tinkered with special editions

  • John

maybe on bluray, but not some half ass 3d attempt in cinemas with bad glasses, low brightness and lack of framerate conversion

  • Bob

They were released on Bluray back in August last year… your clearly a big fan.

  • Ashley Meulink

Never got a chance to see it on the big screen–definitely taking this opportunity!

  • Klf

Good lord, where is the “Fuck No” button.

3D versions of already dire prequel films. Then 3D versions of already ruined special edition original sagas?

My indifference is overflowing. 3D is a cynical excuse from the studios to stop piracy in the long run. A cash cow that will be a requirement in the very near future.

  • Terry

I strongly dislike 3D, it tends to cause me eye strain and give me headaches of the film lasts more than 2 hours, it is a pity, if they were re-released in 2d i would certainly watch the Star Wars films in the cinema. when the Special Editions were released I was a teen with no cash to see them so never saw the originals in a cinema, and i may still watch the 3d versions, but it is to re-watch the films in a cinema NOT to see them in 3D

OK!! so we all know that this isn’t a good idea probably to go watch the movies in 3D, mainly because of memories from the past movies that still live within us, and the fear of the movie is just going to be worse in 3D, others for different reasons… REGARDLESS!! I and millions of others are still going to watch this movie again, yes all six movies! … because STAR WARS is just simply STAR WARS end of discussion. One of the best movie experiences were from star wars, everyone just suck it up, go watch it again and re-live the big screen moment again. After all its star wars… people who have seen it before-enjoy it again. People who have never seen it before (have mercy on your soul) now have a chance to witness it all over again on the big screen. (yes, who cares if the industry is just trying to make easy money over this “3D re-release plan” i say just enjoy it, re-live the moment, if not, go cry about it… please lets not make this into a war. peace.)

  • Chris11

I grew up with the original parts 4, 5 and 6. When the Pantom Menace first came along I was bitterley disappointed, far too much CGI etc etc. However, I love 3D movies at the cinema, and I couldnt resist going to see this…..I loved it!! I enjoyed the film much more and the 3D was awesome. Roll on Part 2!

  • Chris11

I forgot to mention…some people complain of headaches and even nausea…it is VERY IMPORTANT when watching the movie that you keep your head straight! Do not lean, chin in hand etc cos this could create problems for your brain to sort the 3D effects properly, which lead to eye strain, headache and nausea.
