Spatial View, the Toronto based company behind the 3DeeCentral portal, have today announced its mobile 3D content portal is available for the LG Optimus 3D and HTV EVO 3D smartphones.

Previously, 3DeeCentral had only been available for the iPhone 3 and 4, which requires a lenticular overlay for glasses free 3D viewing called the 3DeeSlide.
The business model behind Spatial View’s 3D app is structured around pay per view. The application itself is free and there are over 150 clips currently available, some of which are free to view but most costing a few dollars each. Genres include music videos, documentaries, animation and extreme sports. Producers can submit their 3D content to Spatial View and, if accepted, can enjoy a 50/50 revenue share on a non-exclusive basis.

In a surprising move, Spatial View have also decided to offer direct access to YouTube 3D through the 3DeeCentral app (although the LG Optimus 3D phone already offers direct access to YouTube 3D via the 3D menu). However, with most 3D content on YouTube being user generated, it should not pose a threat to 3DeeCentral’s premium service.

“The main reasons 3D has not achieved mainstream adoption is because it’s difficult to access 3D content and there isn’t a huge variety to choose from, “says Al Lopez, COO of Spatial View. “Our 3DeeCentral app addresses this issue for both Android and iPhone users. Now, iPhone 4/4S users have access to the YouTube 3D channel with the latest version of the 3DeeCentral app. Users of the LG Optimus 3D and the HTC EVO 3D smart phones, and an iPhone 4/4S with a 3DeeSlide, don't need to wear glasses to view content in 3D, making it an even more compelling experience.”

It is rumoured that LG will be launching a new version of its 3D handset at the Mobile World Congress soon although the popularity of 3D smartphones has yet to be proven with ASDA recently slashing the handset only price of the HTV EVO to just £229 and LG missing its sales forecasts. The industry is looking closely at glasses free 3D tablets, a market Spatial View is actively pursuing.
