Sky 3D to air new 3D series about the Galapagos Islands
After the world premiere of The Bachelor King 3D last night (due to air 20:00 December 31st on Sky 3D), Atlantic Productions producer Anthony Geffen announced the forthcoming production of a new David Attenborough 3D documentary focussing on the Galapagos islands.
Galapagos 3D will be produced by Colossus Productions, the joint venture between Atlantic Productions and Sky 3D. The three part series, due to air late 2012, will be the fourth David Attenborough backed 3D natural history programme after Flying Monsters 3D, The Bachelor King 3D and The Kingdom of Plants 3D (previously known as Kew 3D).
The big budget commission is part of the extra investment Sky is committed to (over £600 million a year by 2014 which is a 50% increase)
Referring to the cumbersome, intrusive equipment required for high end 3D documentary making David Attenborough said last night “The wonderful thing about the Galapagos Islands is that they (the animals) are simply not afraid of human beings. If you go there during the nesting season, birds will come out and peck the hairs on your head. It’s a wonderful place with smashing volcanoes and a population of varied animals which aren’t afraid of you so it seems a very good place for 3D.”
Anthony Geffen will produce Galapagos 3D and is hoping to apply what has been learnt from his other natural history productions…
“David and I really wanted to think of a place where we could take everything we have learnt with Flying Monsters 3D, underwater filming with Bachelor King and the macro filming of Kew. In a way Galapagos is crying out for all of those techniques and that is what we are very excited about.”
Head of Sky 3D John Cassy has added “The Galapagos is one of Earth's greatest treasures but it is unreachable for the vast majority of us. 3D will bring the islands to life for our customers in a way that has never been possible before. Sir David and Atlantic Productions are the natural partners to take on this ambitious project on – and ensure our natural history programming continues to break new ground."
A trailer for Kingdom of Plants 3D was also shown last night and judging from the short clips presented, it looks like it could be a game changer for close up filming.
