Orange to launch 3D channel for mobile phones in 2012
Following France Telecom’s 49% share acquisition of popular European video sharing website Dailymotion, Orange has launched its Dailymotion 3D channel which will be available for mobiles and tablets in early 2012
Orange TV (owned by France Telecom) already operate a 3D video-on-demand channel but the first episode of its flagship show, Mag3D, has been ported to the new Dailymotion 3D channel. Mag3D is a magazine style 3D show about … 3D, supported by www.lemag3d.com. The 26 minute show (pictured) reviews cinema releases, DVDs, exhibitions, Video Games, Music videos, etc as well as includes a lifestyle zone featuring cooking, travel, interior design and sport.
The Dailymotion 3D portal (website – www.dailymotion.com/fr/3D) is available now offering 3D content filtered into the categories of Mag 3D (November episode currently online) and Documentaries – where viewers can watch “the first episode of "The Greatest Forest in the World", take a moment to relax by watching 3D entertainment on MyZenTV or relive a modern historic event with the wedding ceremony of Prince Albert II of Monaco and Charlene Wittstock”.
Other categories include Movies (there are currently four 3D movie trailers available) and Music (no uploads currently). In all there are only 36 videos available at launch (compared to the hundreds if not thousands on YouTube 3D) but user generated 3D content will follow where Orange will award the best home made productions.
Content on the French language website can be viewed in red/cyan anaglyph and side-by-side for output to 3D televisions and laptops.
Orange TV also plan to launch the 3D channel on mobile devices and tablets as it is an area Head of Orange 3D Project Ghislaine Le Rhun Gautier (interviewed below) believes will drive the uptake of 3D services, especially at the time of the Olympics…
“We could envisage the 2012 Olympics being viewed on mobile devices connected to our service,” she said in August 2011. “A 3D Olympics will be the greatest opportunity for our customers to experience 3D.The event could be the catalyst which truly kicks the market off for 3D.”
Orange TV plan to launch their 3D channel on mobile handsets by February 2012. 3D Focus is waiting to hear back from the press office as to what mobiles will be supported.
