NBC Universal to broadcast the London Olympics in 3D
NBC Universal is to broadcast the London 2012 Olympic games in 3D. It will be airing over 200 3D hours of the event including the opening and closing ceremonies this summer in association with Panasonic writes Adrian Pennington from CES in Las Vegas.
The giant US broadcaster will not be alone in taking the host 3D feed but it is the first to officially announced its plans to do so. Panasonic’s consumer marketing chief, Betty Noonan hinted that the company was working on a number of special 3D events in the run up to the Games.
The electronics manufacturer further announced an extension of its sponsorship of DirecTV’s n3D channel and mentioned that a number of joint commissioned new programmes were in the works.
“For a new format 3D did quite well last year,” said Shiro Kitajima, president CE Marketing. “This year I am confident will be the year of 3D content.”
Indeed 93% of its plasma displays and 40% of its LCD TVs plus four out of its six new Blu-ray players are 3D capable.
