Sky 3D will ‘blow viewers away’ in 2012
Briefly talking to 3D Focus, Head of Sky 3D John Cassy has said the UK’s only 3D channel will feature more ambitious shows for larger audiences.
“We’ve learnt so much over the past 12 months. We’ve raised the bar and the technology is catching up with the scale of our ambition. Some of the shows we have planned for 2012 will blow viewers away. And with strong 3D TV sales forecast in 2012 more people will get a chance to view than ever before.” said Cassy.
Premieres on Sky 3D in 2012 include the recent broadcast of Nick Baker’s one hour natural history show Beautiful Freaks 3D, aerial 3D show France From Above 3D, weekly 3D games review show 3D Games Review, David Attenborough hosted The Kingdom of Plants, Galapagos 3D (the first production out of Atlantic Productions/Sky 3D joint venture Colossus Productions) plus ten part reality show Safari Park 3D.
“Production technology improvements and falling prices of 3D TVs have both moved faster than I thought” said Cassy. “We’ve know a great deal more about making top 3D now than we did this time last year and I’m sure it will be the same next Christmas”.
Looking back at 2011, Cassy had mixed thoughts…
“A procession of mediocre 3D movies didn’t help the category but it is good to see the likes of Lion King and Hugo bringing a bit of balance back.” He continued, “Our live broadcast of the UEFA Champions League final being taken by 19 broadcasters around the world plus winning a BAFTA for Flying Monsters 3D demonstrated how fast 3D was moving.”
Sky is committed to over £600 million a year for original programming by 2014 (across all Sky channels).
