Ruud Peters, Chief Intellectual Property Officer at Philips said “By unveiling Dolby 3D, we introduce a 3D HD format capable of powering glasses-free 3D displays of any size, enabling broadcasters, operators, content aggregators, and device manufacturers to deliver HD-quality 3D on any device.”

The core component of Dolby 3D is a pixel-accurate conversion/multiview-rendering module. It’s designed to deliver "depth-accurate" 3D video for glasses-free 3D displays as well as real-time conversion of 2D content to 3D and user control to adjust depth and perspective for any 3D display.

Dolby 3D “significantly improves the 3D picture quality of all 3D devices, glasses-based or glasses-free” by upgrading half resolution up to full resolution 3D, even on glasses required 3D TVs by adding an enhancement layer for an extra 10% bandwidth. 3D Focus is waiting to hear back from Dolby to understand how this will work on passive 3D TV sets.

Dolby 3D is deployable within the existing broadcast chain and applications on connected TVs, tablets, and smartphones – regardless of the display technology used in the device. The depth map signal can be delivered over existing infrastructures so 2D, 3D and AS3D can be sent in the same signal.

Ramzi Haidamus, Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Dolby Laboratories, stated: “We believe that Dolby 3D can help drive the adoption of 3D—creating a comfortable, customisable, truly enjoyable glasses-free 3D viewing experience while enhancing 3D display performance. Armed with the innovative glasses-free 3D display technology from Philips, based on years of extensive research and development in the field, we plan to bring the same philosophy to 3D that Dolby has brought to the audio space—integrating our technologies and strengths throughout the entire content chain. Consumers will know that when they see Dolby 3D content on a 3D-enabled device, it will look its very best.”

Adding to this, Guido Voltolina, General Manager of the joint project said “Dolby and Philips are committed to taking the 3D experience to the next level and delivering a high-quality solution for all 3D display devices, including today’s glasses-based devices and tomorrow’s glasses-free displays. Working on cutting-edge technology with two leading companies is very exciting, and I’m thrilled to lead this unique joint effort.”

The idea of the project is to work with display panel and entertainment devices makers; licensing the technology to enhance the performance of 3D consumer devices. The companies hope broadcasters and content owners will choose to encode their 3D titles in Dolby 3D with access to the Dolby 3D suite of tools which includes real-time 3D content conversion.

Dolby 3D is being demonstrated at the NAB Show ® (April 16–19, 2012) at booth SU1212.

good stuff. Not sure if passive 3D can benefit from this… I had LG passive telly and had to get rid of it. 3D effects are poor and utterly not enjoyable. Now using Samsung active 50in tv set and also 3D projection. Having said that, 3D projection is a way forward and 3d films on 120in in your own living room looks just amazing. There is no public cinema which could rival the experience.
