REDRAY Player goes on sale 475x252 RED 4K player now available for pre order

RED’s REDRAY player offers 4K 3D resolution and 1TB of internal storage for $1,450.

The unit is capable of a native resolution of 4,096 × 2,160 or 3,840 x 2,160 video playback and up to 120 frames per second. You will need a 4K display to see the output however, which could be a 4K panel such as LG’s 84" ultra HD monster or you could wait for the RED single laser projector, due early next year.

Surpassing Blu-ray with more than just resolution, the REDRAY player will offer 12-bit 4:2:2 resolution, 1TB of internal storage and support for 48fps and 60fps 3D. It can be controlled via an iPad app or standard remote control.

With limited display options right now (of which are very expensive), people might choose to wait for the Red laser projector, due to go on sale early next year. With a planned price point at below $10,000 for the home theatre version, the 4K 3D single lens projector could seriously dent REALD’s market share for smaller cinema venues.

Ted Schilowitz, one of the founding members of RED, tells 3D Focus: “Our 4K projection system is laser based and next generation in every shape and form.  It has a very small form factor, is scalable and the target pricepoints will be breakthrough in every way. We can drive two eyes at a 120 frames per second using passive glasses technology to watch them, so you end up with a very smooth watchable 3D experience. The advantages with laser projection is you can increase the brightness and you can separate the light source from the projector head. You don’t actually need a projector room holding the entire projection system. It’s going to be pretty wonderful.”

Aimed at both the home and theatrical market, the REDRAY player is part of an overall end-to-end strategy by RED, which includes offering content. Odemax.com is an OTT solution dedicated to 4K material due to go live in January for distributors with a home/theatrical service planned for March. Content will be watchable on the cloud-enabled REDRAY 4K layers.
