Behind-the-Scenes of LG Optimus Glasses Free 3D Promo
After exclusively revealing glasses free 3D display specialists Alioscopy were installing 200 of their 24” monitors in phone stores around Europe to promote the LG Optimus 3D smartphone, 3D Focus has a fascinating video to share...
3D specialists Inition pitched the concept of producing a short video to be shown in a glasses free 3D point of sale kiosks. The three minute film features two free runners who use the LG Optimus 3D phone to record each other performing various stunts on roofs in east London in 3D. They then upload the clips to YouTube as well as a large 3DTV.
The short film was recorded with a RED camera rig at 100 frames per second, que lots of speed ramping effects. The biggest challenge was to convert the two image film (left and right) into an eight image/viewpoint sequence – the minimum required for Alioscopy lenticular screens. Inition had to digitally create the viewpoints in-between using tools such as Ocula, Nuke and After Effects. The result is impressive and completely unnoticeable from a regular 3D experience.
Inition commissioned a short behind the scenes video showing the making of the LG Optimus 3D European promo film which you can watch below.

The Lenticular Content Challenge
Creating convincing 3D content for glasses free lenticular screens poses a challenge. For single viewing devices such as the Nintendo 3DS and LG Optimus 3D, only the two left and images are required as the viewer is naturally positioned within the ‘viewing zone’ (however minimal). Larger public display glasses 3D free screens need to cater for wide viewing ranges and multiple viewers meaning a minimum of 8 viewpoints are required. For a shop window campaign for De Beers jewellery, Inition rotated a camera around the showcase jewels to obtain the extra viewpoints.
The new company iPont will soon be entering their third iteration of a hardware/software solution which attempts to add frames / angles of perspective to the two frames of a side by side frame compatible format for auto-stereo viewing adding and proprietary technology to convert a regular Sky 3D broadcast into a glasses free 3D experience. Earlier this year, the company installed a 65” auto-stereoscopic Tridelity display in a Covent Garden pub to screen the Champions League Final.
