200 Alioscopy Glasses Free 3D Displays to Promote LG Optimus
In the biggest ever glasses free 3D display installation in Europe, autostereoscopic specialists Alioscopy have been busy installing 200 glasses free 3D screens in phone shops in a deal to promote the LG Optimus 3D phone.
LG are using 200 x 24” glasses free 3D Alioscopy displays housed in FSDU (Floor Standing Display Unit) totem style pods to showcase their new glasses free 3D phone. A specially produced 3D clip will attract the attention of phone buyers in Germany, France, Spain, Belgium and Poland who LG will hope is enough to convince them of the value of glasses free 3D to persuade them to buy the LG Optimus smartphone which was released recently.
Also, in the UK, mobile phone retailer Carphone Warehouse has signed a distribution deal with digital2go and have now installed Alioscopy's 24” auto-stereoscopic display in 24 of its flagship stores. The pilot phase will see the glasses free 3D displays promoting a range of phones, not just the LG Optimus (HTV EVO 3D anyone?).
Gilles Marcellier From Alioscopy Warns Against Not Tailor Making 3D Content (VIDEO)
Taking a leaf out of Mark Kermode’s book, Gilles Marcellier from glasses free 3D specialist Alioscopy, warned that the core reason 3D has crept back into the cinema mainstream for the third time was to fight piracy and get people out of their homes and away from their home cinema systems. In a speech at this year’s Dimension 3 Expo in Paris (which is available to watch below), he argued that most 3D movie releases in recent years, with the exception of a few titles like Avatar, have been “quite mediocre”, and that the studios have used 3D to make a film bankable that would have otherwise generated little interest. Gilles warned that this is completely the wrong approach. Gilles’s observations could be proving to be correct as the industry experiences the fall out of this approach with the ongoing downturn in 3D ticket sales.
Gilles said that 3D is a different grammar requiring a new way of storytelling and that rather being a sense, it is a sensation that needs to be conceived by the brain. He continued to say 3D films require more continuous sequences and a slower temp. He highlighted his hypotheses with the trial Alioscopy and digital2go did with Pearl & Dean.
The autostereo display specialists and cinema advertising agency joined forces with Paramount Pictures and Alioscopy distributor digital2go to install glasses free 3D screens in UK cinema foyers, screening the Thor 3D trailer reported by 3D Focus last month as part of a 5 week trial. The trailer was converted to an autostereoscopic format by Dimenco but the results were not as expecting. The conversion by Dimenco was fantastic according to Gilles. It was more the fact that the Thor trailer was edited so extremely quickly with no shot lasting longer than one second as it was designed for large screen 3D projection rather than smaller autostereo displays. Gilles said that when the brain does not have enough time to assimilate the 3D effect, the effect is lost. Gilles went on to say a 3D film needs more continuous long sequences and therefore music videos that are typically full of fast cuts would not be watchable in 3D. Such a case study proces the importance of tailor making 3D content for the type of 3D display it will be shown on.
Glasses Free 3D Cinema Foyer Trial Attention Grabbing Success
What was more positive were that the results of the Alioscopy cinema foyer trial proved the attention grabbing power of glasses free 3D displays in a high foot-fall environment. Alioscopy results obtained by 3D Focus shows that over 10,000 people viewed the screens for more than 3 seconds. The Quividi audience measurement tool was used to register audience viewing habits with the help of a video sensor mounted on the screens and a HSS Highly-Direction Audio System ensured the audio track of the trailer was delivered to a precise location and, therefore, did not disturb the rest of the foyer. You can watch a demo of directional sound .
