In what sounds like a 3D version of the BBC’s Britain From Above, Britain & Ireland From The Sky is a theme park style show starting tonight which will offer armchair viewers a flying trip above the UK and Ireland.

Sky 3D’s latest experiential documentary features personal narration from James Nesbitt, Alison Steadman, Ashley Jenson and Michael Sheen and runs for 8  x half hour episodes.

Production company Bigger Pictures and their partners Widescreen Productions, filmed a range of 5 feet up to 5000 feet for a birds-eye view experience, tracking over the landscape, hovering above monuments, spying on historic cities, and surveying the population, allowing the audience to glimpse their homeland in a way not affordable for most of us.

According to the production company, Bigger Pictures, the 3D documentary took 17 days of shooting in a helicopter plus 20 days on the ground. Production equipment hire company Presteigne Charter built an entirely new rig for the production in order to get the cameras far enough away from each other to produce an effective 3D effect which, in this case, was essentially twice the normal distance. The further an image is away from a 3D camera, the further apart the two cameras need to be to reproduce a 3D effect.

Britain & Ireland From The Sky 3D is said to show how spectacular the UK and Ireland really is. According to the Producer, many people who worked on the show have actually booked staycations. Perhaps Sky and Bigger Pictures should have done a commission deal with the various tourist boards!

Filming extends to right to the very edges of Britain and Ireland including Cornwall, Ben Bulben (Ireland), Rathlin Island (Northern Ireland), Portmeirion (Wales) and Loch Alsh (Scotland).

John Cassy, Sky 3D's Channel Director says:

"From the moment Britain & Ireland from The sky 3D starts, the breathtaking birds-eye views capture your attention. For the first time 3D viewers can see the landscapes of these beautiful islands from a unique aerial perspective, and learn of previously untold personal stories from stars such as James Nesbitt and Alison Steadman in this brand new eight-part series."

Britain & Ireland From the Sky 3D was pitched to Sky 3D by Bigger Pictures. A 2D version of the documentary  will also be screened on Sky Atlantic HD. Britain & Ireland from the sky will be screened on Sky 3D from 22:00 on 9th June 2011.

What a fantastic idea for a programme, was really looking forwards to it. What a complete disappointment. A mosh mashe programme with no direction with random presenters whizzed through some amazing places with no information. The most random programme I have ever watched. Was hoping it would be a little like the bbcs coast programme but no. I wouldn’t know how to describe it but crackers.
