Sony have launched a nifty online augmented reality application designed to assist people in gaging a suitable new TV size for their environment.
Rather than a real time, webcam based system, people are invited to download an A4 sized augmented reality symbol from an online TV Size Guide Tool. They then place the print out where there are considering positioning their new TV.
The next step is to take a photograph of the AR maker and its surrounding area with a high quality digital camera and then upload that image to the Sony microsite. A range of Sony televisions are then superimposed where the marker is, the idea being people can better judge a suitable sized television for their living room when seeing it how it would look if it were really there.
Images are saved to a gallery which enables the user to compare television models side by side.
Tim Schwarz, Online Content Manager, Sony Europe explains: “Up until now a tape measure and guess work is all that most of us have had to rely on when it comes to picking the best sized TV for the home and this often leads to mistakes. We know consumers put a lot of emphasis on getting the right screen size and our research has shown that this is one of the most important features they look for when buying a TV. What people don’t often realise is that TVs take up a lot less space than they used to, so you really can go larger. This is why we’ve developed this simple guide – to give you the confidence to choose the right size TV by accurately visualising how it would look in situ before you buy.”
