Glasses Free 3D TV Just Around the Corner Say iPONT & SES

Glasses free 3D specialists iPONT International and SES Astra are joining forces to persuade the attendees of this year’s IBC that glasses free 3D TV is here now – not in the future.

At this year’s IBC 2011 in Amsterdam, SES Astra and iPONT International plan to show how close we are to enjoying glasses free 3D TV in the home.

“The quality of glasses-free 3DTV technologies have been hampered by viewing angles, depth, resolution and real-time imagery issues with few yet to deliver that premium-viewing experience,” explained Thomas Wrede, VP Reception Systems SES ASTRA.   “iPONT’s maturing technology is an intriguing development and its progress has been impressive making us confident that glasses-free 3DTV for the home is going with us in the not too distant future.”

On the market realisation of glasses-free 3DTV, Tamas Vahl, global director iPONT International said: “Major TV operators know that for 3D to truly go mainstream glasses-free 3DTV needs to happen sooner rather than later.   Once that conundrum is solved then it will make it easier for pay-TV operators to sell 3D TV to the consumer and to programme makers, which we expect to drive the next wave of top-tier HD programming.”

Visitors at this year’s IBC will be able to witness live demos of iPONT’s two viewpoint stereoscopic to multi-viewpoint autostereoscopic video conversion on a 42” glasses free 3D screen. The 3D feed will be coming from the Astra 3D demo channel.

Earlier this year, IPONT installed a 65” glasses free 3D screen in the Walkabout pub, Covent Garden London in time for the Champions League Final which was watched in 3D without glasses by pub goers. The match was converted from a regular Sky 3D feed to a format suitable for autostereo viewing thanks to iPONT’s proprietary software.
