Storm Surfers 3D coming to Sky 3D channel
The critically acclaimed Storm Surfers 3D series will air on the Sky 3D channel in September
The four part series follows two Australian friends during their persuit to ride the largest waves across the Great Southern Ocean with the aid of surf forecaster Ben Matson.
Storm Surfers 3D TV was shot in 2011 and 3D cameras filmed surfing legend Ross Clarke-Jones and two-time world champion Tom Carroll complete eight surfing missions in a single season and captured world-first 3D footage at breaks around Australia and Hawaii. The series features cutting edge stereoscopic graphics to portray powerful storms tracking across oceans and the gigantic swells.
GoPro 3D cameras were used extensively due to their small size. After ten prototypes, the team invented a unique system to avoid water getting on the lenses. Called the 'Air Knife', two jets of high pressured air blew any water away from the lenses, keeping both left and right eyes completely dry.
John Cassy, Sky 3D’s channel director commented: “Storm Surfers 3D provides a thrilling and inspiring cinematic experience and makes for fascinating viewing, showing it’s not all about calling ‘surf’s up’. In the course of four episodes, the duo conquer giant swells across Australia and transport the viewer under and over and through waves using spectacular 3D technology bought to life with Sky 3D.”
Storm Surfers 3D will be supported with a 10 x 2 minute 3D 'How-To' webisode series; a 10 x 3 minute 2D 'Profile' webisode series; Interactive Game for smart phones and tablets; a 90 page eMagazine for iOS and Android tablets and a rich media website. Storm Surfers 3D – The movie, will be released in September and highlights from the 90 minute film will presented at this year’s 3D Entertainment Summit in LA.
The first episode of Storm Surfers 3D will air on the Sky 3D channel, September 2rd.
