European satellite operator Eutelsat has launched Europe’s first unencrypted 4K (Ultra-HD) channel

The demo channel is being transmitted by Eutelsat’s EUTELSAT 10A satellite and will be used for in-store demos of Ultra-HD TV sets and a showcase opportunity for production companies.

According to Advanced Television, the 4K channel features specially commissioned content which is compressed with MPEG4 at 40 Mbit/s, 50 frames per second.

“This new step towards 4K continues Eutelsat’s longstanding commitment to achieving new broadcast milestones that over the last 20 years have included digital TV, HDTV and 3D,” said Jean-François Leprince-Ringuet, Eutelsat’s Commercial Director. “Early and close collaboration between all players in the broadcast chain will be a key success factor for this new revolution and so we are delighted to propose this first broadcast platform for Europe.”

Eutelsat expect Ultra-HD consumer sets will start to reach the market on a significant scale in 2015.  It will be a challenge to broadcast such high resolution signals via terrestrial paths so satellite transmission is likely to be the method of delivery in the medium term. The take-off of Ultra HD should be facilitated by the forthcoming implementation of a new compression standard, HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding).

Eutelsat’s satellite required no modification to accommodate the Ultra-HD transmissions and can transport several Quad HDTV / 4k TV channels per transponder.
