ESA astronaut and flight engineer André Kuipers, has provided a new video which combines spectacular visual imagery of the Earth with more mundane (but still strangely absorbing) imagery of life onboard the International Space Station, over 200 miles in the sky. The short sequence features stills taken with the Fujifilm W3 camera. These include some stunning shots of the curvature of the Earth and famous landmarks like the Grand Canyon.

There are also some Aliens style 3D corridor float throughs but perhaps less dramatic is the domesticity of doing the vacuum cleaning (even in space there is no escape from the housekeeping chores!). Video was taken using the Erasmus Recording Binocular (ERB-2) camera which has been onboard since last summer and was used by Flight Engineer Ron Garan who talked about the work on board the ISS during the world’s first live stereoscopic broadcast from space last August.

The camera itself was developed by the European Space Agency themselves and is the second generation of ESA's stereoscopic camera family developed by Cosine BV (Leiden, the Netherlands) and Techno System (Naples, Italy).

The following YouTube 3D video (which offers a range of stereoscopic viewing options) provides the viewer with a sense of presence in the constrained and dense habitat the astronauts live in.
