Comcast Launch Xfinity 3D
Another Day, Another 3D Channel – Xfinity 3D
Massive US cable company Comcast will be launching their own 24 hour 3D channel on February 20th.
Xfinity 3D, a 3D channel featuring 3D music, sports, movies and original programming, will launch with a broadcast of the Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic, a match-up between the Montreal Canadiens and Calgary Flames at McMahon Stadium in Calgary. This will be followed by a 3D concert of Kings of Leon filmed in Hamberg, Germany.
Xfinity is Comcast’s brand name for their TV, broadband and telephone packages including video on demand. In fact, Comcast had already been offering 3D video on demand content on their HBO 3D On demand platform with over a million views since the Masters Golf Tournament in April last year. Comcast have promised original 3D content including Chinese dragon dancing and rhythmic gymnastics.
“Whether it is a concert, sporting event or movie, Xfinity 3D brings the best seats in the house right to customers’ living rooms,” said Marcien Jenckes, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Video Services for Comcast. “As the leader in 3D, we will continue to bring our customers the best 3D content available today.”
Comcast have been very active in 3D and has already brought customers 3D programming around sporting events such as the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ semi-finals and finals, NASCAR’s Coke Zero 400, basketball’s Old Spice Classic and college football games along with movies including Bolt, Clash of the Titans, Despicable Me, Chicken Little, The Last Airbender and others.
There is no subscription charge for Xfinity 3D and it will be available to about 20 million households.
Xfinity 3D will be going head to head with recently launched 3net – the 24 hour 3D channel from Discovery, IMAX and Sony. ESPN 3D have also recently transferred from a 3D event based channel to a 24 hour rolling 3D channel.
In Europe, other 3D channels are springing up too. The question is, with the already limited 3D content out there – can these channels be sustained?
