Affordable 3D scanner set to launch
3D NEWS> 3D PRINTING
If a Kickstarter funding campaign is successful, CADScan will launch a 3D scanner for just £649
In theory, people will be able to place an object in the scanner and get it replicated by a home 3D printer. The CADScan can generate watertight mesh models (essential for 3D printing) and no training, calibration or post processing is required. It can capture full colour, accurate 3D models compatible with all major CAD packages and 3D printers.
The size of the scanning chamber is 25cm x 25cm x 25cm which is similar to many 3D printers making the concept of 3D photocopying viable.
It has been designed as an affordable option for designers, engineers and CAD operators.
“Our scanner fills a clear gap in the market, with CADScan 3D you simply put your object on the scanner’s turntable and the CADScan 3D does the rest." said Alastair Buchanan, co-founder of Chester based CADScan.
“With the CADScan 3D we want to bring quality 3D scanning within the reach of professionals and hobbyists alike. There are millions of engineers and designers worldwide who want an affordable means of turning physical objects into 3D models – with CADScan 3D we believe will meet that need.”

The CADScan 3D Kickstarter campaign launched on February 12th and is currently £50,000 towards its £80,000 goal (ends March 19th).
“Our current focus is on getting production units ready to ship,” said Buchanan. “There’s a lot of scope to develop our technology further; it can be scaled and optimised and we will be developing higher performance versions in the future.”
Earlier in the month we reported on the Lynx A camera – a tablet that offers 3D scanning which has already smashed its Kickstarter funding goal. Its resolution is 0.5cm but the CADScan 3D scanner will support a 3D resolution of 0.2mm.
Pledges start from $1 on the CADScan Kickstarter page
