Soon after announcing his satisfaction of his the 2D – 3D conversion of Star Wars: Episode 1 Phantom Menace, George Lucas cemented his belief in the future of 3D cinema during last night’s Cinemacon conference in Vegas.

He likened the transition to 3D as a similar process to when black and white switched to colour during a roundtable discussion with 3D advocate James Cameron and Dreamworks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg. The Directors also criticised previous poor quality 3D productions and the rush to get some 2D movies converted to 3D.

Jeffrey Katzenberg from Dreamworks which has released a string of 3D titles said, “You disappoint our audiences once, OK, great, we fooled them. Do it twice, shame on us.

James pointed at digital technology has broken down all limitations saying “We’re really at a point where if we can imagine it, we can create it, there are no limitations now.

George Lucas is having all his Star Wars movies converted to 3D. London VFX has has recently completed the conversion of the first Star Wars installment. James Cameron is also involved with getting Titanic converted to 3D.

It is debatable whether 3D and colour can be compared. After all, colour does not require its audience to wear glasses and view a dark image. Also, there is a large proportion of the movie going audience who would rather watch their films in 2D than 3D. But with more 3D films on their way, the cost of 3D production decreasing and the quality of 2D – 3D conversion increasing, perhaps major blockbusters in 3D will be the norm in the cinema. Who knows for now?
