360 Degree Interactive Music Video – Watch This!
YellowBird (formed in March 2009) but have created a 360 interactive degree advert for Doritos allowing the viewer to rotate the camera around the scene whilst the video is running. Think of those interactive 'vitual tour' photos you often get on hotel websites, but for video instead.
YellowBird created the technology a while back which allows for complete camera control from a fixed x/y position (the camera can move along the x and y plane as a pre-recording) but the viewer can not control this axis) within a spherical shape. YellowBird's technology has been extend to include live full motion 360 degree broadcasting (Live), interactive 360 degree videos which includes 'hot spots' (Rich Media). If a viewer clicks a 'hot spot' additional information can be accessed such as a webpage or stats.
Doritos approached YellowBird to create a campaign using this technology that was viewable on YouTube. YouTube has approved yellowBird’s technology and allows embedding the yellowBird player in their client’s branded channels. The yellowBird player was heavily customized for this project into an embeddable widget that features a 360º music video of Professor Green, plus social network links, a 2D (unwrapped) version to watch the video traditionally and you can buy the track from inside the yellowBird player.
The music video is based around a warehouse party sequence starts in a lift and moves around a number of coridors and rooms. It must be a major challenge filming a 360 degree production. For a start, every aspect of the scene has to be viewable so crew, lighting, tracks etc must be concealed.I spoke to Theo Jongedijk from YellowBird and asked him how the motion of the camera was controlled. Apparently a man was hidden in a box below the camera (hidden by the digital yellow circle when the camera is pointed to the floor by the user. This was very challenging as he 'drove' the camera around the warehouse within a very small space.
